To prepare the driver for MLO support, split the driver vif
data structure to scale for multiple links. This requires changing
the use of arvif to per link and not per hw which can now
comprise of multiple links.
Also since most configurations from mac80211 are done per link, do refactoring
of the driver functions to apply these configurations at link level.

Split ath12k_vif which is the driver private of ieee80211_vif to store
link specific information as ath12k_link_vif. For default use cases
the ath12k vif will have a preallocated link vif called deflink which will
be used by non ML and the first link vif of ML vif.

With MLO Support to be added, remaining link vifs will be allocated during
channel assignment where vdev create/start happens. These link vifs will be
freed during interface down.

To refactor existing ath12k_vif to make use of link vifs, following
changes are made,

 1. ath12k_vif now called by variable name ahvif stores multiple
 arvifs(ah12k_link_vif) and also has a back pointer to ieee80211_vif.

 2. In this patch set, only deflink is used to be on par with the
 existing code. When MLO support is added the link id will be used to
 fetch the arvif.

 3. For mac80211 ops which doesn't use specific link_id, the config or info
 is common for the vif, hence apply the config to all link vifs.
 The links_map in the ahvif, will be used to identify all the link vifs that
 are setup.

 4. Change ath12k_vif_to_arvif() as ath12k_vif_to_ahvif() to fetch the
 hw level vif. The link vif can be fetched from ahvif->link[], or the
 deflink can be accessed via ahvif->deflink. API to access link
 vif(arvif) by passing link_id can be introduced with MLO Support.

 5. The ieee80211_vif can be accessed from ahvif using ath12k_ahvif_to_vif()

Locking:
 Currently modifications to members of arvif and arsta are protected by ar->conf_mutex
 and it stays as such.
 Now with these hw level structure (ahvif) being introduced, any modifications
 to its members and link objects (i.e., arvifs[] which are dynamically allocated)
 needs to be protected for writing and ah->conf_mutex is used for the same.
 Also, atomic contexts(say WMI events and certain mac_ops) that we currently have in driver
 will not(shouldn't be allowed) do any modifications but can read them and
 rcu_read_lock() is used for the same.

Please elaborate more about your locking design. Because of past bad
contributions from Qualcomm the bar is really high for adding any new
locks. I'm doing the locking analysis right now but it would help a lot
if you could provide your own analysis.

My first impressions:

It's really confusing to have two locks with the same name (conf_mutex
in struct ath12k_hw and struct ath12k).

struct ath12k_hw already has hw_mutex so I'm even more suspicious about
this locking design. That's not explained at all in commit messages.

Something I noticed while reviewing this patchset:

Here we are we clearing ahvif so ahvif->deflink is NULL.

So here we assign arvif to NULL.

And because arvif is NULL this is a null pointer reference, right? Or am
I missing something?

I'm still reviewing the patchset, please don't submit a new version
until I have said that the review is done.

deflink is not a pointer member. It is statically defined inside ahvif.
So basically this memsets the whole deflink memory region to 0.

This would be a still valid pointer.

So since it is valid pointer, this is not a NULL pointer de-reference.

Ah, of course. Clearly my vacation was too good and I forgot C :) Thanks!

I didn't get any replies, and my own analysis is still ongoing, but the
more I look at this, the more I feel using two overlapping mutexes is
overkill. I'm starting to wonder if we would convert to using
wiphy_lock()? That might simplify things significantly. I should have an
old patchset doing that stored somewhere.

The new ah->conf_mutex is particularly introduced to protect the members
and dynamically allocated link objects of ahvif and ahsta
(ahvif/sta->links[]) in process context (i.e. between call backs from
mac80211 and ath12k's workers)
The same is protected by rcu in case of atomic contexts(tasklets of WMI
and in datapath)

The usage ar->conf_mutex remains as such, and replacing ar->conf_mutex
with ah->conf_mutex was not considered, as few of the workers(e.g,
ath12k_sta_rc_update_wk) rely only on ar lock and wouldn't really need
to wait for other ar's to complete the same task.

Ah yes, by the time i wrote initial version of the patch hw_mutex wasn't
there so missed it, Seems we can use the same lock for this too, will
check the feasibility further and update/send v7.

Hmm, i remember usage of wiphy lock globally had lockup situations in
ath12k last time around, if we could think of a solution for that i
guess we could try to replace ah->conf_mutex with combination for
wiphy_lock and rcu.

I need more info than that. I can't understand which conf_mutex protects
what data exactly, currently it just looks random to me.

Let's take an example:

static void ath12k_mac_op_bss_info_changed(struct ieee80211_hw *hw,
...
	mutex_lock(&ah->conf_mutex);
	arvif = &ahvif->deflink;
	ar = ath12k_get_ar_by_vif(hw, vif);
	if (!ar) {
		cache = ath12k_arvif_get_cache(arvif);
...

	mutex_lock(&ar->conf_mutex);

	ath12k_mac_bss_info_changed(ar, arvif, info, changed);

So first mac80211 calls ath12k_mac_op_bss_info_changed() with wiphy
mutex held. Then ath12k takes ah->conf_mutex and soon after also
ar->conf_mutex. So we are basically holding three locks and it's not
clear for me the difference between ah and ar mutexes. For example, do
ath12k_get_ar_by_vif() & ath12k_arvif_get_cache() require ah->conf_mutex
to be held? Or why are we taking it here?

I guess ahvif->deflink access does not require any protection because in
ath12k_mac_op_tx() we access ahvif->deflink without any protection:

	struct ath12k_link_vif *arvif = &ahvif->deflink;

Anyway, I just could not understand this locking design and besides it
just looks uncessarily complex. I propose dropping the new conf_mutex in
this patchset altogether and handle the locking in a separate patchset
later on.

AFAICS removing ah->conf_mutex from this patchset should be safe as
mac80211 is holding the wiphy mutex already. Of course I might have
missed something but at least that's what it looks like.

Note that currently only deflink is referred here, but when MLO is
enabled, info->link_id will be used to de-refer corresponding link
i.e, arvif = rcu_dereference(ahvif->link[info->link_id]);

ah->conf_mutex is taken since link object is referenced, and yes
currently only deflink is referred, but once MLO is enabled,
info->link_id from mac80211 is used to refer the corresponding link[] arvif.
> ar->conf_mutex.
ar conf_mutex is existing lock which is taken for synchronization of
configuration between this mac80211 callback and workers of the same ar
(say ath12k_sta_rc_update_wk()) since this config is applied on an arvif
belonging to that ar.
So we are basically holding three locks and it's not

No, above two functions doesn't really need ah->conf_mutex at this
point, but ath12k_arvif_get_cache() is being modified for MLO (check
[v2] wifi: ath12k: prepare vif config caching for MLO) where caching is
done in ahvif and there it will be needed.

ath12k_mac_op_tx() will always be in atomic context as mac80211 ensures
it to be under rcu_read_lock() hence referring and reading link objects
of ahvif is safe, but cannot modify it.

You're right wiphy/sdata lock is held on all callbacks from mac80211 and
synchronized naturally, but these callbacks running along with workers
which will be referring link objects of ahvif (e.g,
ath12k_mgmt_over_wmi_tx_work() referring deflink as of now will use
skb_cb->link_id to fetch corresponding link arvif) will still need some
sort of synchronization.
