In several places of the UEFI sub-system UEFI variables as accessed via runtime services functions. These functions require being called via EFI_CALL() to restore the register holding the gd variable. Some code even calls the functions via the runtime services table. By making the functions exposing the variable runtime services wrappers for exported functions that we can use internally we get rid of this clumsy code.
