Turns out I'd put the Signed-off-by in the wrong place, and checkpatch clearly just looks for its presence while the linter on the CI server is stricter. (I'm not a git user, and am having to do a lot of this stuff manually.) The last time I touched the Linux kernel was in the late 1990s. There wasn't any process back then.
